Course Introduction:

This graduate-level course (for master’s and doctoral students) introduces a few openings – as points of departure in research – between social cultural theories and concrete buildings and spaces, in which specific connections can be found, a rich lifeworld recovered and new research perspectives (re) discovered.This course tests social theories and cultural studies against a material world of micro sites, spaces and buildings, to uncover often uncertain dynamics between detailed material constructions and large-scale social operations, to discover if possible stubborn resistances of material buildings and their irreplacable values. Key topics include: buildings as institutions; prisons as mirco political spaces; buildings in war; media in architecture; ‘distribution of the sensible’; the everyday for a progressive design; gardens in modern architecture; landacape painting as/for a body politic; research methods and thesis writing.  The objective is to develop in students a methodological capacity, abstract and critical thinking, and perceptive observation on realities, to assist our students – with methods and ideas – in their design exercise, academic research and thesis writing.

本课程向研究生（硕、博）介绍建筑研究的若干切入点，在社会文化理论与建筑物质空间之间，寻找具体的关系，还原丰富的社会生活，拓开研究新视野。本课程的核心构架是用社会理论和文化研究理论，研究物质的微观的建筑空间，显示微观建筑与宏观社会之间不确定的互动关系，挖掘微观物质建筑的抵抗和独特价值。课程探讨的议题包括：建筑作为社会机构、监狱及微观空间、战争中的建筑物、建筑媒介与媒体、“感觉分布”理论、日常生活与设计、现代建筑中的园林、绘画与观画群体、研究方法与写作，等。本课程的核心目的是培养研究生的方法意识、抽象思维和敏锐观察，为设计创作和学术论文提供方法和思路。
